Canada
Canada has no specific legislation concernig tattooing or piercing practices.
Legal Basis: In Canada there are Guidelines for Infection Prevention and Control Practices for Tattooing and Body Piercing* recommended by the Bureau of Infectious Diseases of Health Canada in July 1999 which contain an assessment of infection risks and why infection prevention and control practices are necessary as well as the principles of infection prevention and control relevant to these procedures.
Alberta aditionally issued the Health Standards and Guidelines for Tattooing (.pdf) and the Health Standards and Guidelines for Body and Ear Piercing (.pdf) in June 2002 outlining infection prevention techniques that are critical in reducing the risk of disease transmission during the tattoo and piercing processes.
Definitions: The Guidelines are for practitioners who perform tattooing, ear/body piercing, and electrolysis
Licencing, education and skills: -
Sterility requirements: Hygiene Guidelines are recommended by Health Canada. The Guidelines describe the equipment and istruments involved in the processes without further mentioning sterilization.
