Tattoo History - Tahiti
Tahiti
In april of 1769 the world circumnavigator James Cook landed on the island of Tahiti. The discoverer of the new world were the first britons the art of the tatau was introduced to.
Different to the natives of neighboring polynesian islands, samoa or marquesas the natives on Tahiti mastered the art of the full body tatau. Some of the sailors were so enthusiastic and impressed with the art that they let the natives decorate their arms with patterns.
On his second journey James Cook brought the Tahitian Omai back with him to England where Omai was displayed on courtyards and castles to the upper society.
